CATL: sodium batteries at minus 40 degrees
About this video
Minus 40 degrees. And over 90 percent of power. That is how CATL describes Naxtra, its sodium-ion battery. Instead of lithium: sodium, which is many times more abundant on Earth. Up to 175 watt-hours per kilogram, the same as in cheaper lithium batteries. Crushed, drilled and sawn through, it did not catch fire. These are the manufacturer's tests. The first car is to be the Changan Nevo A06: over 400 kilometers of range. Why sodium? In China, lithium has risen in price by nearly 190 percent since June last year. Sodium is meant to stop the price of lithium from dictating the price of a car. The catch: for now it is not cheaper, and as of October we have found no confirmation of deliveries. CATL talks of production in the fourth quarter.
