EU vs Chinese hybrids
About this video
27 percent duty on an electric car. 10 on a hybrid. Same maker, same China. The EU put extra duties only on electric cars. So BYD and MG started shipping plug-in hybrids to Europe. According to the Financial Times, 2 years ago just under 4 thousand arrived each month. In July: about 50 thousand. Brussels asked Beijing to limit exports itself. Beijing refused. On October 9, a deal was announced. The EU commissioner speaks of hybrid exports falling by more than half. But the joint statement has no figures. And as recently as January, the Commission denied planning duties on hybrids. In Poland, the BYD Seal U hybrid is on sale now. If the EU closes this loophole, it is unlikely to get cheaper.
