China: new battery standard, no fire and no explosion

About this video

5 minutes. That is how long China's standard used to give people to escape a burning electric car. From July 1, that is not enough. The battery in a new model must not catch fire or explode at all. 2 new tests are added: an impact to the underside, like a stone on the road, and a short circuit after 300 fast charges. Carmakers are already showing it off. XPENG sets fire to the G9L battery from below. Geely drives a road roller over its own. CATL and BYD announced passing the tests more than a year ahead of the deadline. And they gain the most. Smaller cell makers may find it much harder. The catch: models approved earlier have until July next year. And a Chinese expert cools the excitement: this standard is only the required minimum.
