Nio: a battery swap in 144 seconds

About this video

144 seconds. According to Nio, that is how long a battery swap takes. The car drives into the station. A machine unbolts the empty battery from below and fits a charged one. In August, Nio counted its 120-millionth swap. It has over 4 thousand stations in China. On top of that, a car bought without a battery is 108,000 yuan cheaper. The battery comes on a subscription. But the network cost over 20 billion yuan. And Nio is still losing money: almost 15 billion last year. And it has a rival that plays a different game. In half a year, BYD put up 10 thousand chargers that refill most of a battery in 5 minutes. In Europe, Nio has about 60 stations and is not building new ones. Which will win, swapping or fast charging, is still unclear.
